A brief review: The Pirates of Coney Island is a pretty fantastic little comic book about a teen that runs away to Coney Island and joins a gang called, of course, the Pirates.
The comic is at its best capturing the moods of Coney Island, the quiet but dangerous nights and the hot dog, bikini, sun-blasted mishmash of activity of a busy summer day on the board walk. Spears and Lolos take advantage of the paneling to create a strong sense of pacing, most noticeably during the cinematic, rapid-cut car chases and the awkward silences that fill the conversation. The plot is classic, troubled youth on the run, breaking all the rules and escaping miraculously, but unfortunately it lends itself to some pretty tortured dialogue, "Well, welcome to the jungle, baby." (Oh, to be a runaway teen in a dark alley!)
Over all it's pretty entertaining and I imagine anyone that loves comics or Coney Island will enjoy it. Imagine a begrudged Peter Pan in Coney Island, it's a good fit.
Look out for Issue #5 of 8 coming out this month.
